MusicThing has an interesting article today about playing kora. I should tell you I am not a big fan of ethnic instruments, I love rock music, that is why I enjoy the sound of the guitar the most. But hearing how this “kora” sounds, I couldn’t stop myself from posting it here. If you think about it, it sounds similar to a guitar in a way.

I think there’s definitely a link from the kora, to the blues, to rock. Have you heard the stuff Toumani Diabate did with Taj Mahal? They did kora and guitar versions of blues songs. You can also hear the link in the playing of Vieux Farka Toure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OSsSruMo4Y

I didn’t know the Whamola, sounds strange and interesting. I see on Wikipedia it is also played by John Myung of Dream Theater , very interesting…
