Yamaha Silent guitarIf you are like me, and I guess you are since you read these lines, you often felt like playing the guitar in the middle of the night. I know it used to happen to me quite often. And also, you probably know that it is not a good idea, unless you live by yourself. If you don’t, well…then you know what I mean.

But how about playing a guitar that is…silent. I know it sounds somehow like playing the air guitar, but it is not about the air guitar (that one still makes noise when turning up the volume on your CD player, you know!!) but about Yamaha Silent Guitar! Yep! You probably know it, I know about it for some time now (was released somewhere in 2002, I think), but I haven’t had the opportunity to test it personally yet. However, I know I would like to own one for those sleepless nights when I feel like playing.

The interesting thing is that, at least in the video below, it sounds quite interesting (OK, through a sound processor). Also, Yamaha SLG 100N model comes with nylon strings and the fact that you can plug in a CD player makes it great for rehearsing since you can play over your own previously recorded material.

I wanted to hear just how quiet it was more than what it sounds like amplified, isn’t that the point? Surely it’s no quieter than an electric!

Well, Jon, you are right, I guess that being quiet it’s the main feature here so this one should be tested. However, I could not find a video or a test for this, even if, believe me, I tried. Anyway, after some research and long tail searches I have found this guy here http://www.lemkuiper.com/guitars/guitars.html saying something about it what I think you will find useful from this point of view:
“Acoustically it makes very little noise. Even less than an unplugged electric.”

I think this somehow answers your question. It is obvious that it can not be that quiet that you can not hear it, the strings must vibrate, after all, to be picked up but the electric guitar still has a body to sustain the sound while this one has not. And if we also count the fact that the SLG100N comes with nylon strings, which make even less noise than standard electric guitar strings, then I think that we could agree that it is quieter than an unplugged electric guitar. Agree?

The Yamaha dealership in the city has one of these. If I think of it, I’ll go up and play it sometime this week and write back.

Well, Tom, please do and let us know how you find it compared to a unplugged electric guitar.
