Yep! I am not a big fan of Zakk Wylde.
OK, you can beat the hell out of me later for this. I am not a big Ozzy fan either, I love a few of his songs, but I am actually into more recent rock trends but that’s just my personal taste.
But when I found this solo on YT, I was just charmed. Charmed, really. Beyond metal, beyond style, beyond everything, here’s one incredibly talented guy making the most of his Gibson guitar, no fancy setup, no floyd, no whammy bar, just pure soul…
There’s so much passion in what he plays here, so much soul, that I can not stop myself wanting to hear more and more. So, here it is…
…and still wanna hear more.
So I will probably go home, take my guitar and try a few of his songs. The fact is that beyond everything, the man is a legend and I don’t think there are many guitar players out there that made such a mark in the history of rock music the way he did.
By the way, any big fans of Zakk around here? Just to know, to watch my back!

I really like Zakk’s playing actually but I can only take it in small bites because it gets a little too much sometimes. I think his vibrato is amazing and instantly recognisable and he has a really awkward looking picking hand, a bit like Marty Friedman which seems to go against the whole relaxed hand position and yet he maintains incredible speed!

I was thinking the same thing about his picking style, seems his hand is moving from his elbow, not wrist, and the hand is totally against the string, I would have said that instead of helping, the position of the right hand makes his life harder, but what do you know…

I’m a fan of Wylde. But mostly the stuff he’s one with Ozzy. His Black Label Society stuff is cool but not a fan. His columns on guitar were very good, actually.

Not a huge fan at all, but you’ve got to give it to him he knows his stuff. Its all a little to much for me, I agree with Jon on that, and I much prefer him on the acoustic guitar.

Well, I guess we all have to agree that his playing is great, he is a great guitar player and not many musicians can stand up to this guy, either we like him or not.

I like his style, but who I like more is Zakk’s good friend, Dimebag. My wife really loves Zakk’s song and video “In This River”. Good song, indeed.

I’m a fan and have seen him live a couple of times. Extremely talented. My only real issues with Zakk are the biker persona that seems forced, the overuse of pinch harmonics and the fact that he seems to release everything he’s ever recorded, regardless of quality.

According to Joe Coffey of Premier Guitar, Tommy Smothers showed up at the L.A. Amp Show and beat Zakk Wylde in an arm wrestling match.
Zakk Wylde is what you get when you cross Kid Rock with Steve Morse, and put a steel plate in the back of his head.

I’m not a fan, nor am I impressed.

@G-V: I found it a bit too “the same” everywhere, if I make sense without being nasty. I would have said that the song was a bit boring for me, I listened it and I really wondered why did he sing the same thing for the whole song.
@Sammy: he is very talented, indeed. I didn’t know he releases many materials, I am not following him, I only knew a part of his works. But indeed, you need to be careful what you release, especially when you have a name.
@Stratoblogster: “Zakk Wylde is what you get when you cross Kid Rock with Steve Morse, and put a steel plate in the back of his head.” Ha, ha, cool!!
@Danny: come on, personally I am impressed, not a fan, but impressed, however. You’ve got to agree, he has his certain something as a guitar player.

I think he can play the heck out of a guitar. I think he and Dimebag were born with guitars in there hands.
I also think Zack should leave the singing to someone else.
Guitar playing good, singing baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddd!!!!
Sorry if the truth hurts Zack.

Well KJ, personally I like the way he sings, really
However I think that he should work a bit on diction but for the rest, I like his singing.

I have some of his music I downloaded where he is singing live and he sings some Ozzy songs. I think it’s no more tears that he does and I can’t stand it. The tempo is changed and it was butchered, to me. I have him singing a Led Zepplin song that isn’t bad.
I know I couldn’t sing any better, that’s for sure! I do like his guitar playing better than his singing.
Not to change the subject, and I know I will offend some by saying that I can’t stand to hear Serge Tankian sing, if that is what you call it. He sounds more like a cat getting stepped on,run over, shot, stabbed, and blown up.

@ Cheap Guitars: Regarding No More Tears, Zakk wrote the song, music and lyrics, so he included his own version on one of his albums. It’s at a different tempo and arrangement on purpose.

@ Sammy: I like Ozzy’s version better! I’m just saying which one I like better. I saw here No More Tears info Osbourne, Wylde, Mike Inez, Castillo, John Purdell all helped write the song. It is one of my favorite songs on the cd.
I understand the different tempo and arrangement was on purpose, I just like Ozzy’s version better, my wife loves Zakk’s version better.
If we all agreed about everything, it would be a boring world.
I wish I could play half as well as he does. He kicks butt on a guitar, but he can’t help he can’t sing.(wife smacked me)
I’m just kidding, his singing is better Barney Fife’s!!!(Andy Griffith Show)

Zakk is a talented Guy with a great style.
Listen to Book of Shadows and tell me this guy does not have it in bucket loads. Not just the playing either.
