These days I am in one of those periods where nothing really comes to me easy, in terms of inspiration, or whatever you want to call it…
I didn’t post anything yesterday because nothing came to my mind. Period. Yesterday evening while rehearsing with my band, I searched for a better “solution” for the guitar part of one new song and frankly it was not that great. Seems it is a general state, I guess it may be the weather, outside it is sunny and beautiful while I am in here…well…
I guess everybody faces such periods but in artistic environment they really suck! How about if you are a composer pressed to deliver a song by the end of the week and you don’t have any good phrase yet and nothing comes to mind? How about if you are a writer and feel empty of all those great ideas that used to come to your mind a few years ago?
I guess I am not the only one facing such periods, isn’t it? What do you do when it happens to you?
PS: You know, any answer you may come up with must be better than the one I saw on a funny poster, with a monkey squeezed in a corner saying (whenever I feel like working) I squeeze into this corner and wait for it to go, guess it won’t last forever…

Think you’ve got a couple of questions there.
1) How to find enough subjects to write about and keep a blog going?
2) How to write music through creatively-barren times.
I think the two could be approached differently. You’ve tackled (1) in one way in this post, by asking how others handle it. You could go further and ask for ideas from your readers and other people, e.g. what would they like to read about, what do they want to discuss, topics for conversation, etc.
Here’s one for you. What’s the best gig you’ve been in the audience for? And what’s the best gig you’ve played at? What do you think the difference was for the audience at the two gigs? Just the first thing that came into my head.
Could do it for the worst you’ve played and attended as well.
There’s a lot of information out there on a number of blogs for handling the first issue.
As for (2), that’s a different kettle-of-fish - never did understand why that means what it does
I started publishing a series about a year ago for ideas to be more musically creative, mainly overcoming any blocks. I’m still going at it and I’m happy with the way it’s going, although have to admit I do have the same barren periods at times. But by applying myself differently, they never really last more than an hour or so. For me, it mainly comes down to changing something, an instrument, your environment, your mood, the tuning, the dynamics and so on. If I do some of them, I often find the answer, sometimes back where I started, but at least I’m happy with the result.

Dearest O:
I will never leave you alone in the doldrums. I will be there when you are feeling down. You’ve got a friend.
Here is the antidote:
7. No hanky panky… just talk to her as you throw up off your balcony… evolve into a walking pass out… speak of your profound love for the universe and all god’s children’s… great and small
8. Until you stumble into you couch and pass into heavy heavy sleep known as “alpha level: dormant as a desert cactus needle.”
9. When you wake up at the crack of dawn, you call the little lady a cab… no it isn’t over yet.
10. You jump right away in your car and go out to find a rugby team that is looking for a fifteenth man, a hooker, otherwise they “will have to forfeit” sob stories. You volunteer… and not only hook every ball, but score three tries as you win the tournament for strangers’ company.
Wow, I wish I could be there with you. When you look up into that panoramic sky and become engulfed in Tequila Amnesia.
Just pay it forward, don’t thank me. Or you could send a contribution to my children’s education fund. I am preparing them similarly for college…
As always, your friend,

[second submit comment; first didn’t have beginning?]

Here is the antidote:
1. Crash a party where a garage band is playing its heart out to a mosh-oriented crowd of dowagers.
2. Challenge the biggest fella, or gal, to a Tequila Shots Chug Contest. Invite others to join in at stage front during the band’s break. [you really need a good brand of Tequila, Cuervo Gold preferably, you might bring your own]
2. After each shot you all have to do a physical exercise, like jumping jacks, push ups, head stands, etc…
3. Win the contest: even if it takes 42 shots.
4. Accept the love from the crowd as you grab a girl and exit into a silent night due to the effects of Tequila, not actual silence. Use your judgment that is remaining and carefully drive yourselves home to your place.
7. No hanky panky… just talk to her as you throw-up from your balcony… evolve into a walking pass out… speak of your profound love for the universe and all god’s children’s… great and small

@PD: As always, PD you leave me breathless with your comments b but I do appreciate your imagination
I frankly don’t know what to answer to what you have just said, I guess my head already hurts from so many tequila shots
@Alan: about what to blog about, I used to have on my desk a list with ideas that come to my mind now and then, it makes a good start for ideas, but I don’t always follow it, I blog whenever i feel like it and I don’t do it because I need to, so when I don’t feel like blogging, I just don’t do it.
With music it is a bit harder, I think and indeed, changing something really helps, a new point of view gives you a fresh start and in most of the cases inspires you.

Ya know, more often than not, that is exactly how I feel… and look?!
Perhaps I can offer a tip (maybe you already do this) is offer suggestions from your readers. Another suggestion, which I do, is I like to lurk message boards to see what people are talking about.
–As a matter of fact, I’d like to send you some information that you may or may not wish to write about. Can you email me? Thx

Oh wait, you are moderating, so you can delete this message. (I had to use my other email address to send this message) — I just wanted to give you some inside information about a free Boss DS-1 pedal give away at gear-monkey forums. Maybe you’d like to write up a plug about it. Here is the official thread. http://gear-monkey.com/forum/featured-front-page/free-boss-ds1-distortion-pedal-giveaway-contest-t568.0.html
