I usually don’t just pick subjects from other websites, but this song that Emon posted on Guitarkadia.com, following my post of a few days ago about mandolins, just blew me away.
I mean, The Unforgiven is one of the hymns of metal and is a must have for any Metallica fan, but The Unforgiven played on mandolin and banjo, man, it just rules!
The band is Iron Horse, by the way, I rushed and bought Fade to bluegrass vol2, I only hope I receive it since they say to add an additional $2 for shipping outside US, but the Paypal form didn’t allow me to change the amount so I couldn’t do much about it.
You should also know they have a Tribute to GNR Cd, a Tribute to classic rock Cd, a Tribute to Black Label Society Cd, a Tribute to Van Halen, featuring David Lee Roth himself and other similar records. That must be good! I can not tell if it is because the mandolin and banjo don’t allow you to play the songs exactly like the originals or it was just the fact that they didn’t try to sound like the original, however, on a few samples I had the impression of some notes that are missing. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. I don’t speak just about not following the solos, which is fine, considering it is a cover, not a copy, but I speak about some chords, progressions or patterns that gave the very mark of the song. I speak here about Fade to black for ex, or One, if you want.
However, listen the song on YT and you will agree that it just rocks!
What do you say?

If you like this, and I do, I’d recommend you checking out Hayseed Dixie. They have also done a lot of bluegrass covers of rock and metal songs, but their singer has a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek vibe to his singing. Nonetheless, they do really fun, and sometimes funny covers of AC/DC, Zeppelin and a few others.

Thanks, JT, I will check them out. I didn’t know about Hayseed Dixie, but if they come close to Iron Horse, they should be fun to listen!

Hey Ovidiu,
Thanks for the mention. Glad you liked them. Not only is ordering international a pain, but the wait to receive the item is unbearable. I wonder why they have the couple of albums on iTunes and not the most popular ones.
Since I live in Bluegrass country, it would be a crime not to to travel down south, meet some cool musicians and record some authentic bluegrass music for my blog. The great Ralph Stanley is still rocking away and it would be great to meet him, if I can.
To JT: Love Haysee Dixie. I remembered hearing ‘Highway To Hell’ by them several years ago and it totally rocked! The moment I read the name here the song is playing in my head.

To me bluegrass is somehow a mystery, but I discover it as being very cool and if you also add a bit of the old “cover a rock hit” recipe, you have something really catchy. Like that damn song that I keep on listening and listening and listening

I must say, after hearing this, I think I have heard it all!!!
That was nuts. It sounded cool, just I never thought I would hear a Metallica song played in the bluegrass. I wouldn’t have thought the people playing bluegrass would have ever taken the time to listen to Metallica.

I have listened it and after that I went straight to the original song, what a masterpiece…One is …well, considered here THE HYMN of rock music, no other song can be considered this way but One.
