You know, I dig the stage outfit thing, it’s not big deal, we all remember the shiny clothes, KISS with the painted faces, the blood thing and the spikes on leather, OK, you know, but man, I was looking for something today and I suddenly stumbled upon this image with Slipknot.
I don’t know, I’m not into Slipknot, but I do like some heavier music once in a while (like in heavier than…heavy metal) but I find it hard to understand this. Honestly, I think it is a bit too much.

Now, according to my survey of a couple of weeks ago, probably you will also find it strange, because it seems you are not into Slipknot either…
I understand it is a marketing thing, they created an image and they have to stick with it, but, I can only ask myself if I would have been asked by a producer to be part of this and wear such a hideous mask on my face…would I have said yes? I guess you need a particular personality to be part of it, don’t you think?
I ask myself how these guys are in real life?
I mean picture this : mom, I want to introduce you to my boyfriend, he’s an artist, he’s part of that band you are scared of…
Hmm…

It’s all about shock tactics to get noticed. First we had Alice Cooper, then Kiss, Marilyn Manson and onwards to Slipknot. Their new album is very good indeed. Jim Root and Seven have to be the tallest men in Metal!

The shock and awe effect. It’s what grabs the attention of the metal heads. I have a love/hate relationship with it though. Maybe it’s my age….lol

Every generation has to go a step further than the one before. Years ago it was Slayer who were shocking people with their lyrics and slbum covers, now things are taken a step further, and they actually wear the stuff to freak people out.
In a few years, they’ll be mutilating people on stage and that will seem normal.
Still, these guys can play their stuff though. As long as they are good at what they do, then it doesn’t matter what they look like.

Actually, I believe that they started wearing masks from the get-go, so that they could protect their identities and still be able to enjoy privacy. I have to respect that – I would probably do the same.
Playing for mass crowds is great and all, but why should you have to be a monkey all the time? including in your private life?

@Dr J: If you watch some clips from the 80′s well, you may just have a point…
@TW: I don’t think this is the reason, but I agree that stars don’t have privacy. However, there’s something else, here, marketing, image, show, not privacy, IMO.

Yes, it’s a marketing thing or showmanship thing, but the new Slipknot album is very good. It’s a very good mix of heavy and melodic, aggressive and clean vocals, and great guitar work.

I think that in the last years the bands that made it big are some kind of a mixture of styles, so what Slipknot plays, follows a trend, I think. However, I dig the marketing thing, because I can compare it to Manowar’s stupid outfits (I am a fan, remember?), but I just think it is a bit too much.

Mushroomhead has better masks.
