Call me stupid, call me uninformed, call me whatever you like, but I swear I didn’t know about this girl, Tal Wilkenfeld, who at only 22 yo!! has been touring with Jeff Beck, Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Steve Vai, and the Allman Brothers. Damn!
I have found out about Tal Wilkenfeld by reading Little Rock Jam’s blog and once again I realized why I love blogging about music so much! Everyday I get the chance to find out about something new and wonderful in this world! That is why!
Tal Wilkenfeld has been playing the bass since less than five years! She started playing the guitar at 14 in her native Sydney and switched over to the electric bass three years later.
“I’ve always just picked up any instrument and been able to play it―I could sit down at the drums or the piano and just play for fun…But as soon as I started playing bass I knew it was my instrument. It was like, ‘Yes this is it. I don’t even want to play guitar anymore, this is amazing.’”
I am not going to reproduce the original article since this is not the idea of this post, you should visit Little Rock Jam and read it for yourself there, but I am going to post a video here so you get my point!
By the way, here’s her MySpace page and also her website.
Well, what do you think about her?

Hey Ovidiu, I’ve got Tal’s album and it’s a very good instrumental jazz album. I’ve also got the Crossroads DVD which is fantastic…Her playing with Jeff Beck is amazing. I think she’s going to be doing some great things in the future.

I think so too, to my shame, I told you I didn’t know about her and she is one hell of a player! When you look at her fingers, seems the bass is way too large for her but she plays in a way that amazed me.

She is indeed! And considering how long she is playing the bass, she is a real wonder.

She’s scary! Just watched her play w/ Jeff Beck and Vinnie Colauilta last night on PBS on the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Anybody who can hold their own with those two is the *hit in my book!!

I think she is one great musician, considering her age too. Not many of us could reach that stage even after long studies and time spent with the bass guitar.

My son plays bass with a band by the name of Halo Stereo so I am a bit prejudice to the bass, but all prejudice aside this girl is on fire! Let’s hear it for the girl, I’m sure we’ll hear alot in the future in regard to this talented, rockin’ lady.

Hello , i saw Jeff Beck Tues. night at the El Rey Theatre here in Los Angeles. Very small venue. Rod Stewart performed two songs with him and then Joss Stone came on stage for one. Great show ,but me and my 50 or so year old buddy were asking ourselves whos the teenager on bass, now we know.

Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton are very, very lucky to be able to put on their resumes that they have been on stage with Tal Wilkenfeld. She’s simply amazing.

I just watched Tal, like everyone else, in amazement……holding her own against Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, in a club show on the Palladia channel!! Most people do air-guitar in that type of rock star fantasy setting!! I play bass too………..she’s a total monster!!

I am watching Jeff beck @ Ronnie Scotts on a DVD form Netflix. This young lady is stunning as a player.
I too am a bass player of many years, jammin stuff like Yes, Rush. RHCP/Flea, and Dixie Dregs. This young lady has so much natural ability that she is worthy of the word prodigy and others like it. I am seriously blown away. Yes she is pretty cute too.
Count me as an instant fan/.

How does someone get that good at bass in such a short period of time? I don’t get that at all. Should must have slept and breathed bass during that time. Must have played not only in her waking hours, but in her sleep.

At her age, with limited experience, and playing at that level with music royalty, she’s in a class all by herself.

Hi, thanks for posting this video, aMAZing! I just caught Jeff Beck in concert on PBS special with this young woman on bass, so had to learn more. She’s great with Beck and now want to check out videos of her alone, so I can better focus on her talent. Am NO guitarist or expert, but she is incredibly kick-*%#. Inspiring. Imagine picking up any instrument and 5 yrs later playing w/ these greats…
