I asked myself which would be the craziest guitar project you could think of? To be honest, so far, the craziest I could think of is to adapt a regular Fender Telecaster in order to add a Floyd Rose. How about it? Fender Telecaster with Floyd Rose! I would like to see one! I have seen there is a Heavy Metal Fender Tele, custom made, but however due to the color and the way it is painted, doesn’t quite look like a Tele.
I speak about a “normal” Telecaster. Like this one!

So, any guitar project crazier than this one?

Alright Ovidiu, I’ve let this slide long enough. I was waiting to see if anybody had anything to say about putting a Floyd on a Tele.
Putting a Floyd Rose on a Telecaster is sacrilege.
It’s like a peanut butter and sardine sandwich.
I’ve played the old ’60s Telecaster with the Bigsby and that makes a little more sense but, not really feeling that either.
So, I’ve thought about it and no; I can’t think of anything crazier than the Floyd-Tele.
Maybe a Floyd on an L5 or something, maybe that’s worse.
How about a Gretsch White Falcon with a scalloped fretboard.
How about Dimarzio X2N’s on a Dobro…..still thinking……….how about a lap steel with a hex pickup…….

Ha, ha! Jack, I just knew it will make you answer
I was thinking that you won’t like the idea of a Floyd Rose on a Telecaster. From your guest article I knew you are using a Fender Telecaster as your main guitar and when I posted this I just knew I will have you commenting here
OK, you have a point, Floyd Rose on a L5 is worse, but it has no point. Scalloped frets on Gretsch, this one too! as for a power pickup on a Dobro…I have never thought about it, but, hey! That’s the reason for this post, right?
How about a Dobro through a harmonizer?

You know Ovidiu, there is a story, that has gone around a bit, about me getting into a fistfight with a band leader because he demanded that I put a whammy bar on my Tele.
It’s partially true. It never came to blows. But, I did join a road band, oh 16 years ago??or so, and this guy that was the leader, 2 minutes after I met him the first time face to face, he says; “All my guitar players play “Eruption”, you must play “Eruption” to be in this band.” And, he also said that I “must” have a whammy bar and that I should get a Floyd installed on the Tele.
Like I said, we didn’t get in a physical fight, but I was ready to head home after the first five minutes. I didn’t like the whammy idea but, I really didn’t like the idea of being “his” guitar player more. When I started to grab my bags and head for the bus station he changed his attitude because, he had gigs booked and didn’t want to be caught without a guitar player. I was in that band for, I don’t know maybe 18 months, and we never did get along after that first meeting.
Dobro/Harmonizer? It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if somebody has done that.
Here’s video of a guy I run into from time to time, Washboard Leo. Leo has a pickup on his washboard and runs it through a multi-effects unit and guitar amp.

[…] wants you to put a Floyd Rose on your Telecaster. I think it’d be cool, especially if you’d get rid of that twangy single-coil bridge […]

Well, Jack, you were quite determined, but I do understand you. Especially in music I think that you need to do what you like, it is more than a job in the office, the regular job that you afford to hate. In music, if you hate something it ain’t working…
Regarding being his guitar player, I think he had attitude issues. So far I have never faced that kind of situation, I play in my “own” band, where we are all here since a lot of time and I would find it difficult to join a band (for money, I guess) to be considered somebody’s player.
And seems you really have a passion for Fender Telecaster
PS:The guy in the video is quite killer, this would have been the object I would have thought the least to transform it into a musical instrument, he kicks ass!

Hate is too strong a word for anything to do with the above situation. I didn’t hate the guy for wanting me to get a whammy on the Tele or wanting me to play like Eddie V.
See, I had traveled around 800 miles to get to where these guys were and, I had heard none of this stuff before I made the commitment to join this band. This was an arrangement that was made by a third party (booking agent/manager)
I objected to the idea that this guy wanted me to change what I was doing, without even hearing what I was doing. He was wanting me to be something different than I am. I love Eddie’s playing but, I’m not going to stand up there and do a piss poor imitation of him or his playing. There is nothing to gain from that.
It’s funny because the same words, “passion for Fender Telecaster” came up in another situation, the other day. I never thought about it that way. I like the Tele because, it seems to fit what I do.
Washboard Leo is a one of a kind. He’ll be glad to know you dug it.

Floyd on a Tele? Nooooooo!
Last night I was watching a band with David, drummer from The Grainger Band (gigging soon, we hope) and he asked me what my dream guitar would be. In all honesty I had to answer that the ESP tele that I have now is not only the best guitar I’ve ever had but also more than fulfills all of my electric guitar needs. And I won’t be adding a Floyd! Ever!

This is one of the best feeling one can get, Gary! To feel happy with your guitar is great, it means you are happy and you can put all your efforts into bing creative instead of thinking how to make the money to buy a new guitar!

A Stratocaster with a Bigsby?

GLW, I think it would be quite ugly, don’t you think? But works for the sake of this idea, of the craziest guitar project ever. A Fender Stratocaster with a Bigsby

I agree that a Floyd on a Tele a horrible thing.
I saw a pic of one on TDPRI.
It didn’t look so bad.
For a hellspawn, that is.
I’d say a Floyd on a Les Paul would be as bad, but Neal Schon has a signature model that’s just that.
A Bigsby on a Flying V? Lonnie Mack.
The idea that’s currently floating my boat is a Tele with a lefty bridge and a reversed headstock. It would just look wrong, wouldn’t it?
