I blogged about him a while back. He’s very good for 8, but in the grand scheme still sounds like a young player. The idea that the gimmick of his youth would rob gigs from more established players is just crazy. The threats have actually worked in his favor. Think of all the free press he’s getting…
Yeah, I guess he is no threat to adults, but the news itself sounds strange. How to receive threats because you play well the guitar? We are living in a crazy world.
Yeah, but there are some crazy parents out there. Here in Texas we had a famous case a few years ago of a cheerleader’s mom killing off the competition…
Jeez people can be dickheads can’t they?! Poor kid is going to be petrified to go outside if they keep doing this. How old does he have to be before people start accepting him?
I’m proud to feature the T-Man in our Strat-o-Brothers & Young Guitar Wonder directories.
In spite of being a child novelty- and there are many – if he sells more beer for the club and brings them in the door, then that’s bottom line. Secondly, if he really likes playing and isn’t being pushed by an overbearing parent, then it’s good for T-Man to be able to play when & wherever he can as long as people listen.
It’s easier to imagine a kid being forced to play the piano or pitch a baseball well than to play Blues guitar. When T-Man and other kids who play guitar well for their age reach adulthood, they’re either gonna have to be very good and compete on an adult level or hang it up.
Joe Bonamassa & Derek Trucks perfect examples of crossing that bridge. Chelsea Constable could be another.
Also remember that for every 10 year old Blues guitar player there are exponentially more 10 year olds rapping, playing video games or doing something more “normal/status quo/contemporary”. 10 year old Blues guitarists will ALWAYS be a niche minority commodity.
I honestly hope this isn’t a publicity thing, because if it is so, then the parents are crazy and irresponsible. Indeed, if he is forced to play, then he will get bored soon, but at this age, I think he has the pleasure to play. Anyway, I ask myself how could you teach a 5-6 years old to play scales? Because he needs to learn them in order to play well.
Anyway, I think he must be watched from a musical point of view to see what life planned for him. The same as with Sungha Jung.

Just a thought, perhaps it was a publicity stunt?

I think it would be a bit too much since in life threatening situations, police gets involved, but I can’t bet my life on it.
