I was recently thinking about the fact that blogging requires a great deal of dedication, time, passion and inspiration. After all, blogging is some kind of work of art, online journalism of some sort, I’d say.
Well, at one moment you have the tendency to lose motivation or inspiration and, even if you still write, you can feel something isn’t quite right.
Yesterday I was asking myself if it is the same with rock musicians that are in the business since a long time. You start, usually at a young age, with a lot of passion, creativity, music comes naturally to you, your guitar is right there, as an extension of your body, you compose a lot of great songs, people love you. You have a hit, then another one, success comes, girls, money, fame…
Then, 20 years pass in an instance, you find yourself to be a star, with a lot of money in the bank, beautiful chicks and expensive properties. You have kind of everything one could wish for. But all those years of touring, recording, playing, made you tired. There’s nothing new anymore in playing and recording new songs, there’s just work now. The urge to make it big has gone, your name is already carved in stone on that street of artists , money are already there.
How can you find the motivation to go on in such cases? What keeps you going strong? I don’t mean just playing, because it is your job, but how can you keep the quality of your songs? What keeps you fresh, motivated and inspired in such cases?
Some say an artist must suffer, (I remember here those Bon Jovi’s lyrics “like a poet needs the pain”) maybe others lost it and tried to find new sources of excitement in alcohol and drugs, hoping to find one more thing to bring something new in their lives. I don’t know.
But the question still remains: what keeps those guys going strong after 20 years of extensive touring, recording and composing? You tell me…

They don’t have to do it just as you don’t have to blog.
I think it’s kind of dumb to dedicate a lot of time to something you don’t love.

Oh, Alice, it’s not quite like this. Personally I like this site and I am sure the stars love their lives the way they are, but come on, you have to agree that after 20 years of doing the same thing you may find it a bit difficult to find inspiration and dedication, especially when money are not a problem anymore.
I guess a solution is to work with professional composers, as a lot of of artists do, and just play the songs other compose, this way having fresh songs everyday. Also, probably the management team keeps you focus on your daily schedule, but your inner motivation and artistic mood, how can you keep it?

Ovidiu,
If you love this Blog and you love the guitar, do what you can, when you can. I am trying to recover 20 years of lost guitar time and lessons and came to the conclusion that it will take time. I think you told me this. At any rate, I am glad that you do what you do. It has helped me keep my focus.
Also, I had passed this article over to my good friends at: http://www.rockhousemethod.com, since it will help me…further my lessons.

I don’t think it matters that much after 20 years, I guess you get used to all these things and constantly need new excitements
