GuitarMx speaks today about “Chickenfoot” project and that is what started me…
If you are not familiar with Chickenfoot, well, let’s say that it’s going to be a 4 stars band, and I don’t mean like 4 out of 5 possible stars. I am referring to the fact that Joe Satriani will be playing the guitar, Sammy Hagar, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith will complete the band. Of course, each of you may see it from an other angle, but me, I look at it from the point of view of the guitar player: Satriani will be there.
OK, now I ask myself if this project will actually become a real band or it will be just a fun thing to do while on holiday. If I well remember, Red Hot Chili Peppers took a 1 year holiday, by the way…
They say that the sound is close to early Zeppelin, not quite my music, if you know what I mean, but frankly it will be fun to listen Satch and his airspace guitar playing Zeppelin-like music, it’s something totally different than what Satriani used us to listen.
I think it will make a very interesting experiment, considering Satriani never-ending quest for out-of-this-world sound. It will be interesting to put this new record they will produce (seems they will go in the studio now) next to Satriani’s digital Engines of Creation, I guess we won’t even find common grounds for comparing them.
I ask myself, will we recognize Satriani on this record? Satriani has one of the most recognizable guitar sound and way of playing in this world but this is exactly because he adopted this futuristic music. Early Zeppelin music means 68-75(?), let’s say, and this is not an era where Satriani’s music will fit…
But I am sure it will be a great experiment and I am looking forward to listening it, since no matter what it will be close to, the value of these people got together for an album is a guarantee for some good songs.
What’s your opinion on this one?

Well, let’s not forget that Joe Satriani has toured as a member of Deep Purple, and Mick Jaggers band and though he played for the song, his tone was in tact and the fills and licks were all Joe’s own… and when the solos came around, nobody was mistaking Joe for Keith Richards or Ronnie Wood, or even Ritchie Blackmore.
Joe was given the liberty to play with those classic songs and add his own style. The Chickenfoot stuff will be his own material, so I’m sure he’ll feel be comfortable with shredding over the songs.

I have mixed feelings, firstly I love Led Zep they are one of my favourite bands even today and for Joe to say their sound is reminiscent of early Zep is quite exciting. If you listen to the way Joe’s sound has changed over the last few albums he has dropped the delay drenched super distorted tone for a really raw tube overdrive sound like in the 70’s. Just listen to Professor Satchafunkilus. However, Sammy Hagar is singing… that is really where the comparisons have to end, he is way to cheesy and will never come close to Robert Plant. His latest solo single is just terrible.

Yeah, I noticed how Satriani changed the tone, indeed, he is warmer today, like for ex on Starry night, I barely recognize him. Also, if you think about his performance in Deep Purple, then you may say he has a history but on Deep Purple’s songs, he plays like Deep Purple, not like Satriani.

@Bill: I have also thought about this, being his own songs, I guess his trademarked licks will be there so I barely wait!

I think that Zep sort of defined the three piece rock band with a front man at least in the general perception. So, this band is a three piece band with a front man and the actual similarities may not go a whole lot deeper than that. As soon as you start making music, somebody in the press will ask you to describe the music. The most effective way to gain a lot of attention is to compare what you are doing to something everybody is familiar with.
I think it will be interesting to hear Satriani in what will essentially be a supporting role. When backing a singer, the most clever lick is not always the best. And, his tone should comply with the bigger picture.
I heard Joe talk about it and he pointed out that, even though what he’s been doing for the last 20 years is the exception to the rule, over 90 percent of guitar playing is rhythm stuff.

It will surely be interesting, I barely wait. I don’t know if the 3+1 formula is what he referred to, both him and Sammy Hagar said the same about the band and I had the impression it is also about the music. By the way, if you are right, it means that me and my band played in an early Zeppelin style band

I agree with Jon-I am interested in this-as a Jimmy Page/Zep fan. I too think that Joe has made his sound more “warm” and less technical over the years. I think this is a good thing.

Should be an interesting project for all of us, I will wait for it.

Actually, quite frankly, the commentary is more interesting messages themselves. (Not to insult the author, of course:))

Well isnt this news! I think that it will be great to see satriani playing in a real band situation (not that he hasnt done it before). Cannot wait until songs become available. awesome.
I agree satriani will find it hard to keep his legato licks under control, his music is NOT led-zep like at all. I like the point someone made before that they referred to something people would know, I suppose just to build hype.
Its worked.
